Suitable Staircases - Part 2

The Grand Entry

This beautiful staircase wasn't always this glamorous. We started with a "contractor's special" as seen below. (The blacked out areas are to protect privacy). The goal in this home was to add something special to get a "wow" factor. (Unfortunately my pics on this job aren't great, so I'm working with what I have.)

As you can see, this is a massive entryway with 20' ceilings. Apart from aesthetics, the clients had issues with noise transferring upstairs. I looked at several acoustic options for the walls but didn't see anything nice enough. Ultimately, we decided to do wainscoting on the walls with wallpaper on the recessed area by the door. This helped the noise issue a little. To warm up the stairway, we chose to apply wood paneling to the sides of the staircase where you see drywall. We replaced the entire rail system with warm gold balusters and rich wood handrails and newels to match the paneling. What a transformation! Click on the slideshow below and take a look at the work in process! It's fascinating watching they guys create the curved handrail to our specification. What skill!

For the walls, we chose a deep gray with warm undertones. This served to bring a more intimate feel to such a large space. While this was done a few years ago when greys were still pretty strong, I still like this dark grey choice. It's warm and the gold balusters really pop against it. It also goes well with the navy carpet, chosen to complement the navy and gold accents throughout the home. Below is the finished product!

The final touches to complete this space would be the wallpaper on the recessed part of the entry wall, a medium toned oak wood floor (stained in coffee or a similar color), and a multi drop pendant chandelier custom made by SHAKÚFF Custom Glass Lighting & Décor in New York. These touches will need to be kept in your imagination as unfortunately they weren't installed prior to these final pics. Take a look at the sketch of the beautiful chandelier though!
